Great information about KBD's, and the founding members
of American Karelian Bear Dog Breeder Association and Club

Some interesting facts:

About 20 years ago, Vladimir Beregovy
( A Russian Zoologist)
was given permission to do a one time breed cross only
by IRO (International Registry), using a KBD male from Finland
and a REL from Karelia, which at that time was Russian
(which had been fought over with Finland for centuries).
The reason this was done and permission granted,
that Vladimir wanted to prove that these two lines are
genetically the same. The product of this cross was registered
as a Karelian Bear Dog.
The Russians were breeding a smaller dog for hunting,
while the Finns were breeding a larger dog for the show ring.
The reason that the American Karelian has the personality and the
size it does, is from this cross.
The Universal Kennel Club International accepted this purebred
line in 1985.

What I like about most of the KBD breeders, is we all love these dogs.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
If we don't know the answer, we will send you to someone
who can help you, or at least try.
You will hear many things about the Karelians, but don't just listen
to one, sometimes it takes another opinion to help you
make up your mind, if these are for you.
I have been around dogs for 40 yrs, and I will say this:
I have never been around a puppy, that just stayed still and listened
without training and spending time.
If you don't, they will teach you a lesson.
